Tax bill!
Hello Russell,
I got hit with a big tax bill this year, partly because I totally miscalculated that I had to pay for both previous year's tax as well as the coming year. I did put some money aside but still had to find an extra £600 (and just after Christmas - ouch!)
I've learned my lesson, but how can I make sure I put away the right amount for tax?!
Mike
Hi Mike Thanks for the
Hi Mike
Thanks for the question!
The surefire way of making sure you have enough money for the taxman is:
every time you invoice anybody or receive any income, take 18% of it and put it in a different bank account. This will virutally always guarantee you have enough for the taxman.
Hope that helps - if you would like to speak further about your specific situation feel free to call me on 0113 394 4616.

VAT on postage
Hello
I post lots of small packages to my customers but have to charge VAT on the postage part pf the invoice but cannot claim back VAT on post as its VAT exempt , is there a better way of accounting postage which will keep the costs down to my customers and ourselves ?
thank you

VAT trap!
Hi Tony
Thanks for the question!
Unfortunately, there is not much you can do here. You are accounting for the VAT on the postage correctly (most people get this wrong).
If your customer is VAT registered, then it won't make any difference to them. I'm guessing though, that your customers are not VAT registered (which means they are paying VAT on the postage).
You could include postage in the price, i.e. not analysing it separately on the invoice although this doesn't really make much difference.

I'd like to ask
About VAT on lease properties... what is it, at what rate, whose exempt? why is it applicable to some properties and not others...

VAT on properties
Hi Hannah
Thanks for the question!
The quick answer is:
Whether there is VAT on lease properties is entirely up to the landlord and whether he/she has opted to charge VAT.
If they do charge VAT it will always be 17.5%.
If you'd like a longer answer more specific to your situation please call me on 0113 394 4616.
Thanks
