Biography

Margaret James-Barber is both a solo and a collaborative artist, a curator and creator of contemporary art, working as much outside the gallery as in it, often linking work in different locations.
Her practice is equally about concept as construction; it is usually site specific and often ephemeral, and sometimes subtly political or issue based.
The work may make you smile and will make you think.
She frequently uses simple accessable materials including food, smell, light shadow, text, billboards, sound and performance, as well as more traditional media in more traditional spaces. Her work is multi-layered and often interactive.
She is a member of the artists group Plaited Fog and the South Lakes Hub and a Cumbria Network committee member.
Margaret trained as a secondary school art teacher in the 1960’s. In 2000 she graduated from UCLAN with a BA Hons Fine Art degree.
