Biography
I design and make ceramics inspired by nature at Bitter Beck Pottery in Cockermouth's Market Place. My work is largely decorative stoneware and includes wall pieces (mostly collages), vessels, hanging and sculptural pieces. My inspiration comes from the textures, forms and colours of bark, leaves, fungi, lichen, ferns and so on.
I set up Bitter Beck Pottery in 2005 when I moved to Cockermouth. The pottery is my studio and a gallery for my work. My aims are to produce affordable hand-made and unique ceramics that encourage people to look at nature afresh. People coming to the pottery can see pieces being made and look at my inspirational photos. I also run evening and day-time courses for small groups.
I started making pottery in 1972 and have continued ever since, firstly at evening classes, then in a home studio, then through workshops and finally college. At the same time I have had careers as a Physics teacher, business analyst and planner, marketing manager and finally as a self-employed management consultant.
