Notes from Penrith HUB meeting, Fri 18th April
We met at No.15
Art or Craft?
Why are some things art not craft? And why some things craft not art?
If you are a craftsperson are you also an artist?
This is how the meeting started, familiar questions coming out about definitions and boundaries. Its easy to make assumptions about what you and / or other people do – but are we all talking on the same thread or are all our views completely different?
Do we need to define the context of what we make and do in order to be able to talk about it effectively?
Activities
In a previous HUB meeting, the idea of utilising an out door space at Newton Rigg came up as a possible starting point for a HUB based project.
Geoff suggested continuing to use a space at the college, where kilns had previously been made over the last few years as part of PotFest.
An idea emerged to use the site to play and produce in an open-ended, non prescribed way, initially using pallets (which could be sourced for free) as material, although other materials could be used in the future. The exercise would be a bit of a test in the sense of turning up without a pre-thought out plan of what would be constructed – the outcome would emerge through the process of taking apart and rebuilding the pallets.
This would be a temporary project – a short term playground. No budget, no constrints, no brief (it is assumed that artists be self insured). It is purely to bring the HUB together to see if anything comes out of it. If the work created worked it might lead onto other developments, and if not lets burn it!
Next steps
Geoff to contact Newton Rigg to check available dates. Suggested date: 31 May.
