The scope of jewellery makers is huge in terms of style, materials and inventiveness and having your work photographed to a high professional standard could be a key part of getting your work to stand out.
Jewellery has many difficulties which are unique to it in terms of photography. It is often small and highly reflective. These two points need careful attention to lighting and camera work.
Small objects often have inherent minor abrasions derived from their hand crafted origins. These give the jewellery its character when viewed normally. However, under the close inspection of a good quality camera lens these marks may look exaggerated and messy. Post capture re-touching is therefore often employed to bring the work back to how we usually see it in real life.
Lighting can also be problematic for such small items as coarse shadows look harsh and unflattering under magnification. Whilst some jewellers use light tents or other ‘off-the-peg’ set ups we prefer to construct a more flexible stage for jewellery photography. A set-up which allows us to control reflections, either by removing them or introducing some, takes more time but our clients find the results are much better.
Photography by Ward's service is available to jewellery makers throughout the UK. Operating from our studios in the heart of the beautiful Lake District, and using postal or courier services, we have photographed the work of talented individuals from around the UK.
