Misty Mountain Top, Blencathra
Artwork by Lionel Playford
Photograph by Lionel Playford
Original Medium Acrylic on canvas
The painting is an adaptation of a quick drawing made from Castle Rigg stone circle. The cloud sits on Blencathra like a veil, shrouding it's sacred top in mystery. I only found out after making the painting that Blencathra had ancient spiritual significance relating to a henge in the Vale of Eden. So my feeling for the mountain, which goes back many decades, was given an extra dimension by the discovery of the connection with prehistoric culture. Certain big hills like Cross Fell, Ingleborough and Cheviot have a draw for me as an artist and it may be that this pull is universal across time and culture.
This image should be featured on the calender because it is thought provoking and not as brash as many modern paintings leaving some space for the imagination. Also it's a good one for winter.
