An idealised view of the Vale of Eden from the Hartside Pass but with the contemporary roadside furniture of Chevrons. The chevrons obviously have a practical purpose in saving life but in the context of the painting they probably have other readings. These particular chevrons are rather emphatic, almost garish, but I liked the look of them as a driver and I had probably driven past them hundreds of times before stopping the car and making a drawing to celebrate their particular interest for me. The road has been pushed up from the original drawing, on which this painting is based, in order to give the composition more graphic stability. The bird eating a road kill animal for me is just part of the everyday life of the road but it too may carry other meanings.
For the calender: how about July, height of the motorbike season on Hartside Pass.
