Do you think your art is driven by your gut feeling, your intuition or from a more intellectual point of view?
For me, and I'm guessing for most people, it's a mixture of the two. I'm happy to trust my instincts at times but am always looking to see some intellectual content or context for the work, otherwise it's just mucking about innit?

it's instinctive
I hate to intellectualise what comes from the heart. I make art as I want to convey a message or an idea that is beyond the realms of intellectualisation. In short I make it coz I want to. End of. However, that puts me in the same frame as abstract painters - or any painter for that matter which abhors me..
Intuition vs. Intellect
I used to think that intuition had nothing to do with making art, that it was a purely intellectual exercise. Now i am doing photography i find that the opposite is true and that letting intuition and feeling guide the work rather than intellect produces much better work....however from a psychological point of view they say that thought always preceeds feeling or emotion so maybe there is no such thing as work driven by intuition alone? I stand to be corrected!

Walker Evans was given a polaroid camera towards the end of his life and he took pictures of anything that appealed to him. He talked about being left with this taste and the camera. His intuition made for some great pictures - sadly none are online, but there's a lovely large book I want to save up for.
I distrust pure intuition as you end up with some people who are just clueless about what they're doing and why. They have no yardstick by which to measure their work, whereas someone who works entirely with their intellect can lose some of the questing qualities that good art has, so it has to be a mix.
I recommend the book mentioned above. The exhibition of its contents was wonderful.
Sounds great!
What is the title of the book please?
Kate Wise
