Indigo by Glen Moyers at Badger Badger until Sat 14th Feb
Indigo by Glen Moyers at Badger Badger until Sat 14th Feb is billed as an exhibition of movement and disorder.
The viewer is greeted with what appears to be an orderly presentation of similar series with the first work encountered being meticulous pencil drawings in a similar style to the hard-edge abstraction used by Eduardo Paolozzi in some of his pop art collages. After their texture-free precision, one finds a random accumulation of black paper squares with the overall shape echoed in the carefully positioned black and white prints alongside. Opposite is a series of bold red and white photos balancing the heaviness of the black and white corner and demonstrating the random order created naturally when paint is added to water.
The attention is then drawn irresistibly to two series of abstract charcoal drawings. With the larger pieces, Moyer explores the space within the paper in compositional terms, whereas the other works are a regular matrix of discreet marks, within which the brain instinctively imagines faces and other recognisable forms. Many of these miniature drawings are reminiscent of the apparently random mark making of Picasso. Moyers’ strategy of using chance as the major component of his exploration is interesting and aesthetically pleasing.
